Railroads and trainyards, especially the abandoned and silent ones and train pictures of steam trains have always filled me with a great curiosity as long as I can remember. These railroads can anything, a small country station or a trainyard in a major city in any country. Close to where I live in Berlin is one such place formely known as the Rangierbahnhof Tempelhof and featured here in the outdoor pictures. The railroad of Natur-Park Schöneberger Südgelände was part of the Rangierbahnhof Tempelhof (switch yard). In the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century the switchyard used to be one of Berlins most productive railroad systems. After the end of World War II the status of Berlin as a divided city and in particular the Berlin blockade lead to the loss of importance of the switch yard which eventually resulted in its decommissioning in the early 50s. Only in a few decades a natural oasis developed. Birches and grasses overgrowing the old tracks, an old steam engine waiting at the edge of the forest. Brueckenmeisterei, engine hall, abandoned locomotive, water tower and switch table…all are witnesses of the moved past of Südgelände.
